Roadworks Report on Strathkinness Low Road, St Andrews

Last week, Fife Council declared a £43,000 investment towards road safety improvements on Strathkinness Low Road in St Andrews with the scheduled work taking place from Monday 13 April to Friday 17 April, 2026.

The project is part of the council’s larger plan to maintain and upgrade Fife’s road network, which spans over 2,400km. According to Councillor Altany Craik — Convener of economy, tourism, strategic planning, and transportation — steady investment in infrastructure is required to support economic development, tourism, and daily travel across the region.

The planned works aim to improve pedestrian safety and reduce vehicle speeds along the route. Measures included the construction of a raised table, drainage upgrades, kerb realignment, and pavement resurfacing.

Strathkinness Low Road was closed between Lawhead Road West and Lawhead School Wynd for the duration of the works, requiring all residents to use alternative streets to access their properties. A signed diversion route was put in place via Strathkinness High Road and Hepburn Gardens, rerouting general traffic. Emergency services were, however, able to access the area throughout the maintenance duration.

Working hours were scheduled between 7:30am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. Drivers were advised to plan for extra time on their journeys due to expected delays. Bus services in the area were also affected, with passengers encouraged to contact their service providers for updated information.

Craik said, according to a Fife Council statement, the Council invests “millions each year” into maintaining and improving roads all over Fife, emphasising that the network plays an important role in supporting both local communities and the regional economy. She went on to say that the maintenance works are necessary given that “almost everyone in Fife uses our roads each day.”

Fife Council has apologised for problems caused during the project and stated that efforts were made to minimise disturbance where possible. Road users and residents were asked for patience and cooperation while the works were carried out.

The work is part of Fife Council’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure across the region, with similar upgrades expected to continue throughout the year.
