The St Andrews Student Union shared on Tuesday, 19 May, 2026 that the Union’s partnership with pub conglomerate JD Wetherspoon has been finalised.
In a post shared via Instagram, the Students’ Union revealed that the Main Bar inside the Union building will enter a partnership with JD Wetherspoon, beginning on 4 September, 2026, before the next academic year.
A consultation for Main Bar opened earlier this academic year, initially with multiple food and drink vendors in the running to partner with Main Bar to fill the space. On 31 March, 2026, it was shared that all potential vendors, apart from Wetherspoons, had been eliminated as a potential option.
A press release from the Union stated that Main Bar will still be owned and operated by the Student Union, but food and drink will be available at Wetherspoons prices. This will “[ensure that] bar staff are employed and managed by the Association, which is already one of the largest student employers in St Andrews. The Union further stated that the partnership would grant them “access to JD Wetherspoon’s operating model.
Main Bar will be renamed under the new partnership, and students will be afforded the opportunity to put forward a list of potential names for the space, taking into account “the area’s local history.”
“The project will include a full refurbishment and rebranding of the current ground‑floor bar, with a complete interior transformation featuring new carpeting, lighting, artwork, fixtures, and fittings.” This renovation will also incorporate “the installation of a new bar layout and drinks dispense system [...] alongside new kitchen equipment” to expand the pub’s product range.
President of Student Opportunities Robert ‘RoMo’ Moran commented that this partnership “is a positive step forward for students in St Andrews, bringing new opportunities, increased employment, and better‑value food and drink. It supports our ambition to make [the Union] a true hub of student life — relevant, vibrant, and shaped by the needs of today’s students.”
Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson added: “We are delighted that a Wetherspoon pub is to open at [the] University of St Andrews and believe it will be a great asset for the students' social life.”
