Midweeks I'm Also in Love

The Sunday League is not the only competitive football tournament in town

“Sunday I’m in Love” might steal the headlines in this newspaper, but it’s not the only student football league in town.

Saints Sixes is a social league with matches played on Mondays and Tuesdays at the Sports Centre. Teams, made up of both students and members of the local community, battle each semester for the prestigious bragging rights of the Saints Sixes league title.

“It seems to be a relaxed league on the surface,” DLL goalkeeper Alvar Ekeus told The Saint. “But it’s a fast-paced style of football we play.”

“We were disappointed with where we finished in the last league campaign,” Ekeus reflected on his team’s fourth-place finish last semester. “We’ll be back for more this time.”

The Saint headed down on a cold Monday night to see what the league is all about.

Played on the 2G astro hockey pitch at the back of the Sports Centre, typical wet Scottish conditions turn the surface into a slip-and-slide, with end-to-end football on display in most matches.

Drimtim, last semester’s invincible winners in the 8pm league, are in a strong position again this time out. Yet to lose a game this semester, they were held to a 1–1 stalemate by previously third-placed Living and Moving last Monday.

With a defensive partnership comparable to that of Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure, they have proved tough to crack so far, conceding on average fewer than two goals per game.

Unfortunately, winless Gerihattricks from last semester’s league find themselves once again at the bottom of the table.

Newcomers Sharks FC handed them their first defeat of the current campaign with a 17–6 thrashing, leaving the Hattricks in need of a Big Sam-style intervention as they drift further from the rest of the pack.

Last semester’s runners-up, The Predators, faced another title setback following a loss last week. Randoms United turned predator into prey, capitalising on a rare Drimtim slip to leapfrog to the summit of the table.

A much-changed Monday 9pm roster features five six-a-side debutants. High-flying Division Two Sunday League side JROD got off to another strong start in the six-a-side league.

With a starting six of BUCS glory and a bench bigger than most other squads, it is difficult to see who can stop them as they aim for an undefeated season.

Another familiar name from the Sunday League table, DLL, finds themselves mid-table, just ahead of Dynamo St Andrews. With Sunday League form failing to translate to the six-a-side pitch, it looks likely that DLL will go trophyless in yet another Monday league campaign.

The bottom-of-the-table clash in the 9pm league saw the St Andrews Derby di Milano, with Integer Milan taking on bitter rivals Inter YourNan. It was a tense affair with little to separate the sides. After the hour, YourNan found themselves 2–1 ahead, meaning they have now picked up more league wins than Tottenham since the start of the calendar year.

“We haven’t gotten off to the best start, but hopefully we can build momentum after this massive win,” Isaac Falconer, Inter YourNan’s striker, told The Saint

With a team of new faces who have rarely played together, Falconer added, “We are starting to gel nicely as a group.” It’s all to play for, with Inter YourNan backing themselves to deliver better performances through the spring.
