Sunday I'm in Love (Guest Edition)

Your weekly Sunday League round-up (ft. Freddie Coughlin)

As one of Sheffield Tuesday’s centre-halves, Sunday means game day.

This week we played defending champions Spartans, who nicked a late 7-2 win in the same fixture last season — time for revenge.

Floodlights on, a good fan turnout, and Sheffield Tuesday “Club Legend” Jake Turcan back for the weekend — visiting from his loan stint in Madrid — if we couldn’t do it now, perhaps we never would.

The game started ominously, with The Spartans playing it out from the back at their first goal kick, neatly working it up the pitch with accurate passes and first touches which put the ball exactly where they wanted it. I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, there’s absolutely no place for that in Sunday League.

Their early possession was rewarded with two scrappy, unfortunate goals. A few more bundled their way in too.

Being the day after Oktoberfest, the lacklustre Tuesday were starting to show just how much fun the day before had been. Rumours were flying that Spartans manager had placed their squad on a weekend long beer-ban. The Saint has been unable to confirm these rumours.

But never write off the mighty Tues’ — Ethan Mullens slotted two from outside the box and one from inside our own half. If Turcan’s a ‘Club Legend’, what does that make Mullens? God?

The game ended 9-3 Spartans. Could have gone either way.

In the rest of the league, Beavers lost a tight game to the so far unbeaten BMC, no shame there.

DLL beat Butts Wynderers 4-3, with a late disallowed goal, adding fuel to debate over the potential introduction of VAR next season.

Strokers and Real Sosobad drew 6-6 in their brutal 9am game, rather you than me, lads.
