The lacrosse side secured the league title in style against rivals Glasgow

The women’s lacrosse team secured the Scottish 1A league title with a hard-fought 16-11 victory over Glasgow under the lights.
St Andrews set the tone from the beginning with a dominating display. Glasgow came back into the game in the third quarter, but a loss was never on the cards for St Andrews.
Captain Morgan Allen played a crucial role in controlling the game, managing the important final stages.
“It’s a reflection of all the hard work we’ve put into training,” Allen said. “We didn’t let the hard game in December put us down.”
December’s reverse fixture in Glasgow was frustrating for the Saints. They lost 11-8 after Glasgow declined to reschedule because of reading week, leaving St Andrews with only one substitute.
There was no love lost between the two sides, who have played a number of heated encounters with numerous red cards.
The tension was equally high this time round.
Glasgow protested the officiating throughout the game, despite both referees holding professional qualifications. At full-time, Glasgow’s Athletic Union contacted St Andrews to raise concerns about the officials.
Supporters surged onto the pitch at the final whistle. Among them was the family of first-year lacrosse player Lyle Crumley, who had travelled from Texas for the occasion.
Crumley’s two brothers, dressed head to toe in Saints lacrosse merch, were particularly delighted.
Jada Wenger, a Buzzball in hand, described it as “the littest day of [her] life.”
Co-captain Patty Riley highlighted the connection within the squad as central to success. “We have connected new and old players, and had so much fun together.”
Celebrations continued well into the night, where the post St Patrick’s Day peace made the champions’ presence all the more noticeable. The squad headed to the Union in full kit alongside the men’s football team, who were also out celebrating their league success.
Requests to borrow their trophy for a team photo, however, fell on deaf ears.
Despite the side’s success, lacrosse will not be entering the race for promotion. Alongside ongoing limitations in support from the AU, over half of the current squad are graduating or returning to their home universities. The focus instead shifts to rebuilding and creating a more sustainable structure for the club’s future.
The rebuild will be led by incoming captains Lyle Crumley and Ella Williams. Both have had standout seasons and will look to carry this momentum forward, with a focus on maintaining the positive environment that has defined the group.
While the team may be changing, it is not disappearing. There is already talk of what comes next together. Plans are in place for many of the seniors to reunite in London, with several looking to join Putney Lacrosse Club. There are even discussions of UK and US road trips every other year, ensuring the group stays connected beyond university.
Beyond the title at stake, this night carried a different meaning for those finishing their time at the club. For many of the seniors, this team has been central to their university experience. It is where they trained, competed, and built the friendships that defined their time in St Andrews.
It is hard to imagine a better ending than a league title under the lights, surrounded by teammates who have become close friends.
