Three men were taken to hospital after a car crashed into a wall in St Andrews during the early hours of Monday 29 June.

The collision, involving a black Suzuki SX4, occurred at the junction of Abbey Park Avenue and Abbey Walk at around 1:45am.

The car’s three occupants, aged 21, 24, and 25, were rushed to Ninewells Hospital following the accident. The nature and severity of the injuries have not been confirmed.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said that they received the initial call about a car crash in St Andrews at 1:44am, at which point they “dispatched four ambulances, our critical care team, and our special operations team to the scene.”

The spokesperson added that they “transported three patients to Ninewells Hospital.”

Abbey Walk, between Abbey Park Avenue and the Old Burgh School, St Leonard’s College, was shut for eight hours with police vehicles remaining at the scene until the lanes reopened at around 10am on Monday.

Finn Nixon, journalist for The Courier, was present at the scene from around 8:30am, reporting: “The front of the car has buckled, and debris is strewn across the junction.”

Nixon continued, “The collision has also brought down several large chunks of the wall,” adding that “drivers coming from the south are having to turn outside the college where a police van is parked, meaning it is quite chaotic.”

According to The Courier, one man visiting St Andrews for his daughter’s graduation reported hearing the accident, and he said: “We heard a huge crash which sounded like a lorry and twenty minutes later my daughter came in and told us there had been a crash.”

The witness added, “It sounded like they had to use a chainsaw to remove people from the car.”

Officers for Police Scotland continue to appeal for more information on the crash, with Sergeant William Low stating on the Police Scotland website that “enquiries into the crash are ongoing and we are appealing to anyone with information to contact us.”

The police statement continued, “We’d also ask anyone with private CCTV or dash-cam footage which could assist our enquiries to come forward.”
