Sunday I'm in Love
After a summer of exhilarating international duties for many, St Andrews players returned to their day jobs: the St Andrews Sunday League. If you’re new, strap in. The season is off to a flyer, and you’re in the right place to keep up with every tantalising moment.
Firstly, what’s changed? Well, the league’s directors have spotted its commercial value, and it’s acquired a corporate sponsor: welcome to the Macron League. We’re entering our Barclays era, but perhaps more iconic. There’s now a third tier as well, with teams in each division due to play each other twice per semester.
Game week one in Macron A provided tight clashes between Beavers and last season’s victors, Botswana Meat Commission. Despite blooding fresh talent, the latter showed glimpses of their flair from last season and began with a 3-2 win against the reds.
The newly formed Stroke FC, took on Strokers FC (confused? Me too) and announced themselves as the better of the two, with a 5-3 win. For anyone considering assembling a team and calling it Strokest: please don’t.
The final matchup came between Sheffield Tuesday and DLL. The last time these two met was in a crunch match deciding who would proceed to the season’s final. If DLL were hungry for revenge, they didn’t show it until late in the second half, when a dynamic comeback saw them claw three back in five minutes. Tuesday held them off to win 4-3.
Across the leagues, there are new teams, new rivalries in the making and goals aplenty. Stay tuned, in print or online.
