Skylight Yoga Space, founded by local yoga instructor Sarah Brannen, opened its doors last weekend on Saturday 19 September.

In an interview with The Saint, Sarah discussed her history with yoga, the creation of the space, and her goals as a yoga instructor. Sarah is a University of St Andrews alumna who has lived in the town since 1999. She’s practised yoga for more than twenty years, and began teaching in 2013. Sarah described yoga as her “support” through various phases of her life, inspiring her to learn more about its history and philosophy.

Her hobby evolved into a career, and Sarah became a full-time yoga instructor in 2018. She said that opening her own yoga space in St Andrews has “been a dream for a long, long time.”

Sarah is especially passionate about making yoga accessible to others while maintaining the practice’s authenticity through the traditional elements of Ashtanga yoga in her classes. She chose St Leonard’s Church Hall as the location of her space for its accessibility to the community.

She said, “I like the fact that it is our space now, but it’s not an intimidating yoga studio. It is a place that people find familiar.” She maintains that she is not a typical fitness teacher or an exercise coach, but a yoga teacher — her classes involve not only movement and postures but also breathing, chanting, and philosophy.

For the student community at the University of St Andrews, Sarah’s space offers an opportunity to develop a yoga practice that can become incorporated into their lives by graduation. She said that it wouldn’t be “just a class that they come to every week, but a practice that is theirs.”

Sarah Brannen’s Skylight Yoga Space is located in St. Leonard’s Church Hall, Hepburn Gardens, St Andrews.
