On Thursday 8 October, a confirmed case of meningococcal disease was reported to NHS Fife’s East Region Health Protection Team. Meningococcal is a bacteria which can cause meningitis, a potentially life-threatening illness.

According to reports from STV and Fife Today, the individual infected is a student at the University of St Andrews who resides in private accommodation. Those identified as being in close contact with the infected person have been contacted and given chemoprophylaxis, in accordance with national NHS guidelines.

Symptoms of meningococcal often resemble the flu and also include brain fog, vomiting, fatigue, and a rash that doesn’t fade when a glass is rolled over it.

The risk to the wider public and fellow students has been assessed as “low”. Meningococcal requires close and prolonged contact for transmission to occur, according to consultant in Public Health, Josie Murray.

“This year, anyone under the age of 25 who has started university for the first time is being offered vaccination against MenB.” Murray continued “The offer is time-limited with first doses available until December 31, 2026 and second doses until March 31, 2027.”

Wow, this is really concerning! I've had friends at uni who faced similar health scares. It’s a reminder to stay updated about vaccinations. Also, during stressful times, I find myself unwinding with online games io – they’re a good escape! Stay safe, everyone!
